Take One Cheerleading Acadamy, located  at 36 Kenosia Avenue in Danbury, Connecticut, is owned and operated by coach Amy Pendergast and her daughter Becky. The gym offers a variety of services, from competitive cheer teams for ages three to 18, tumbling classes for all levels, conditioning and flexibility classes, private lessons, and birthday parties.

In an interview, Becky talked about the atmosphere of the gym, saying Take One prides itself on maintaining an “upbeat and homey” environment. She emphasized the importance of family and how it reflects on the individual relationships she and her mother have with their clientele – from the cheerleaders to their parents to their siblings. Students at Take One include both males and females, and there is even a class for adults who haven’t lost their passion for cheerleading. Becky illustrated a typical day at practice:  jam packed with routines, team meetings, and skill honing through running and conditioning exercises.

Events included on the Take One calendar include 10-plus competitive events, team building experiences, and the “Take One Challenge,” a cheer and dance competition hosted at New Fairfield High School; however, the gym seeks to cultivate and promote a tightly knit group of kids (and adults) who support each other rather than an ultra-competitive spirit. For Becky and her mom, the best part of being a cheerleader can be found in the life lessons, friendships, loyalty, and dedication it takes to be a competitive cheerleader.
