Mom’s Hamburger Hash
Time: 10 min prep, 20 min cook
1.5 lbs ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 bag frozen peas
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
3/4 cup water
2 Tablespoons butter
Melt butter in a large, hot cast iron pan. Sautée onions until soft , then add in garlic and continue to sautée until golden and lightly caramelized. Add in ground beef and stir in onion and garlic until evenly distributed.
Here’s the trick, let the beef cook undisturbed for a few minutes at a time to allow nice crispy bits in the pan, then scrape those bits up when you stir up the meat. Do this two or three times over about 10 to 12 mins. Once the beef is nicely browned, add in peas, soup, and water.
Salt and pepper to taste as it simmers until thick and creamy . Sever over mashed potatoes or wide egg noodles.
