Danbury, Connecticut’s Two Steps Downtown Grille provides a wide variety of meals, refreshing drinks and a great atmosphere, but owner Tom Devine wanted to bring a more memorable form of entertainment to the bustling restaurant.  On April 19, Two Steps held their first night of “Acoustic Wednesdays”.

The weekly event hosts solo and duo musicians from 7 to 11pm in between the bar and the dining room.  In an e-mail interview, Devine’s daughter and Two Steps staff member Kayte explained, “We felt that there was a void for this type of entertainment in the area, something that can be enjoyed by someone in the bar or having a dinner in the dining room.  This is something they can enjoy anywhere in the restaurant and still be able to have a conversation and enjoy the company they are with.”

Acoustic Wednesdays quickly became a regular demand after its first debut.

“We find people not only in the dining room, but also in the bar area either coming in specifically to hear that performer or end up staying to enjoy the live music,” she said.

Kayte said that anyone is welcomed to audition for Acoustic Wednesdays.

“We are looking for singer/songwriters who possess a talent and passion for their music,” she said.  “We’re also looking for musicians who can do a combination of 50/50 originals to covers, which gives them the chance to showcase their personal work but at the same time keep the crowd entertained with familiar songs.”

This week’s Acoustic Wednesday features artist Fred Gillen Jr. As his website says, Gillen Jr. is “part folk singer, part indie rocker, and part poet[…]he writes and sings songs about the human experience, honestly and fearlessly addressing pain, injustice, and isolation in his work, but also acknowledging and celebrating the hope in everyday existence.  Some of Fred’s cover’s include: Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, U2 and many more!”

The lineup for the remainder of July is packed with singer/songwriters Patrick James McHenry (July 13), Amanda Bloom and Jon Chapman (July 20), and Shawn Taylor (July 27).
