If there is an app for creativity and hard work, the students involved in The Student Innovation Expo 2012 in Hartford, Connecticut must have downloaded it! Students from 35 schools statewide will compete in the categories of: Business Plan, ePortfolio, eCommerce, Film, App Design, Marketing Materials, Website Design, Team Leader, Team Player and more.

Over 2,000 students will descend on Hartford’s XL Center for the day-long event, held on May 19. There is no cost to attend the Expo and it is open to the public. Feel free to wander the interactive booths – which past teams have decorated with entire live trees, fully-attired mascots, film screens, free swag and more – and view PowerPoint-style presentations in the auditorium before the awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Winners will be chosen by a host of business professionals, university faculty and science-and-technology experts. Distinguished guests such as Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman will be on-hand to celebrate these cutting-edge students’ achievements.

The Expo is presented by The Center for 21st Century Skills@EDUCATIONCONNECTION. It’s not only a chance for students to gain confidence, credibility and a perk for their college resumes – it’s also a chance to meet new friends from across Connecticut and share ideas.

The Expo is the culmination of a year-long endeavor for the students. Among this year’s 700 entries are projects on healthcare adaptability including: breast cancer vaccinations and hospital hallucinations. Other exciting projects include: diagnostic microchips and an app to allow students to report bullying anonymously to school administrators that is being beta-tested within one state school.

The Center for 21st Century Skills@EDUCATIONCONNECTION partners with CPEP (Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program) to present the Student Innovation Expo 2012. CPEP is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and has expanded from a pre-engineering program into a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-education based organization.

The XL Center is located at 1 Civic Center Plaza in Hartford.  For more information, past winners, video footage and a list of the schools involved, visit ctexpo.org.
