THERE’S SOMETHING PRETTY AMAZING that happens when people come together to cook food.  As an American with little cultural ties to my Old World heritage, just about the only time that I combine other people and cooking is on Thanksgiving.

I have decided that this is a terribly unfortunate situation and something needs to be done about it.

I guess it comes down to Meal vs. Food.  A meal is something that is created, something that is thought out and cared for.  Food is something you shove in your pie-hole and try not to get too much on your shirt (truth: I fail at this often).  I had been thinking about all of this as I tried to figure out what I wanted to prepare for the start of the holiday season.  I wrestled with the idea of making some whacky neo-traditional Thanksgiving meal, and then I realized I just wanted to share the kitchen with someone.

If  you are struggling with a menu for this year’s holidays, let me make a recommendation: Skip it. Cook what you know, cook your tradition, and cook with the people you love.

Despite being unfamiliar with the kitchen, and being on crutches, sharing the kitchen was like a dance of sorts.  You converse, you enjoy each other as much as the aromas, you yell at each other when you realize the turkey has been in the oven for 40 minutes without it being on…

If  you are struggling with a menu for this year’s holidays, let me make a recommendation: Skip it.  Cook what you know, cook your tradition, and cook with the people you love.  An empty seat is a lot harder to fill than an empty roasting pan.

Food in the frames:

Turkey – Fresh Turkey Breast Roast.  Modified version of Michael Simon’s cheese cloth cider recipe tip: Do it. It’s awesome.

Cranberry-Apple Nutmeg Chutney

“Cranberry-Cocktail” Lemon Vodka/Grand Marnier/Cranberry Simple Syrup/Fresh Orange Juice
