Rhubarb Crisp
Food - Appetizers
Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:11

by Alicia Ghio
from Local Food Rocks

It's rhubarb season!

Over the years this is one ingredient I've come to really enjoy. I usually cook it down into some kind of sauce. Sometimes I keep the sauce more on the savory side to use on things like pork or I go a bit more sweet to enjoy over something like vanilla ice cream.

With a bit of extra time on my hands this past weekend I decided to bake a special indulgent treat. The result was Rhubarb Crisp.

a serial by Joseph Benedict

“You know, I think this is enough.” Sky hunched over and panted immediately inside the tiny motel room.

Fang pushed past him, nudging him out of the way as she hurriedly pushed the door shut. Sweat dripped from Sky's dark, damp hair onto his party soaked t-shirt. He stripped the shirt off, exposing muscle and wet skin reddened from exertion. The cloth slapped against the side of the table as he tossed it away.

He flopped face-first onto the red and brown bedding.

Fang looked down at herself. Her lungs expanded easily as she breathed. Not a drop of sweat ran from her skin either and she only felt slightly winded after the fifteen-minute run. Sky rolled onto his back.

Human Euthanasia Will Allow for Ownership of One's Life
The Mercurial - Letters to the Editor
Wednesday, 16 May 2012 10:56

To the Editor,

I'm wondering why The Mercurial chose to run this without labeling it as an opinion piece. It is quite biased, focusing as it does on ways that the proposed law might be abused, while ignoring legitimate arguments in favor of the proposal.

The writer portrays proponents of euthanasia as cold killers, mostly interested in expediency; he misses the heart of the matter entirely. Euthanasia should be legal, not because the person is "going to die anyway" but because a person should have the right to own their own life, which includes the right to end that life.

Winter describes euthanasia only in negative terms - it will "deprive" someone of life, "possibly without their knowledge or consent." Excuse me? That's not how the law is written. Can we talk about reality, instead of his "death panel" paranoid bias?

Local Giraffe Nearly Loses Head on Windy Day
Local - News
Friday, 11 May 2012 15:26

by Amanda Bloom

A PAPER MACHE GIRAFFE residing in Newtown, Connecticut sustained severe injuries yesterday.  The giraffe, who could often be seen poking out of a barn window on Obtuse Road, appeared to have nearly lost its head, possibly from the high winds passing through the region throughout the afternoon and evening.

The giraffe appeared its normal, googly-eyed self at 10am on Thursday morning, and by 6:45 that night, its head was dangling precariously from its neck.

It appears that the injury is not the giraffe's first brush with danger.

The writer and his Tripel.

The writer and his Tripel.

The brew line River Horse, out of Lambertville, New Jersey, impressed me with every selection I tried when I first became aware of them—except for their winter selection a couple years ago—and gave me the idea that they know what they’re doing.

The Tripel Horse, their Belgian-style ale with spices, is no exception.

At 10% alcohol by volume (abv), the Tripel Horse lives up to the style it mimics. Tripels, otherwise known as strong pale ales, were made popular by Trappist monks.

A 1990 issue of TIME magazine exploring one's right to die.

In April, Connecticut officially abolished the death penalty for people convicted of murder, making it the 17th U.S. state to do so, even though a majority of state residents wanted to keep it intact. But as one class of residents gets a reprieve, another class may be vulnerable to continuing efforts across the country to deprive them of life, quite possibly without their knowledge or consent.

The FTC announced today that Skechers USA, Inc. has agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges that the company deceived consumers by making unfounded claims that Shape-ups would help people lose weight, and strengthen and tone their buttocks, legs and abdominal muscles.

Should the Red Cross Refuse Blood From Gay Men?
Health and Humanity - News
Friday, 11 May 2012 12:24

by Sarah Cummings
from The Echo

Danbury's Western Connecticut State University (WestConn) holds several blood drives a year in conjunction with the American Red Cross. Each blood drive has a relatively good turnout of students, faculty, staff and local residents eager to donate to the cause.

Every time WestConn hosts a blood drive, a group of students are refused, and for what legitimate reason?

The American Red Cross website has a long list of eligibility requirements for blood donations. These criteria are given to them from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Under the HIV/AIDS column of this list, it is stated that “males who have had sexual contact with another male, even once, since 1977” are ineligible. It also states that a woman who has had sexual contact with a man who has had sexual contact with another man is also ineligible.

#61: Greater Danbury Open House Day

There are a lot of great things about Greater Danbury (at least 61!), and a bunch of local folks are inviting the public to check out just some of those great things on June 9 for the first Greater Danbury Open House Day.

#60: Elizabeth Park

Elizabeth Park is the home of the world famous, two and a half acre rose garden containing around 800 varieties of roses.

#59: The Old Abandoned MCI Building

Although some people will argue with me that it was in fact the intended housing for some other behemoth corporation (GE), the old abandoned MCI building stood as a landmark in Danbury for, what would you say, well over a decade anyway.
